A registered sex offender from California has moved to the community and the New Richmond Police Department is taking steps to notify the public.
Bryton P. Kraft, 16, now resides on Brigetta Drive in New Richmond. He was convicted of intent to commit rape in April in San Diego, Calif. The victim was an adult female group home worker.
Due to his past criminal history, Kraft has been classified as a “high risk” offender, which prompted the public notification process, according to Police Chief Mark Samelstad. Kraft is a white male weighing about 140 pounds. He stands 5’6”, has blonde hair and blue eyes.
As part of the city’s notification efforts, a community informational meeting will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 27, at 6:30 p.m. in the Council Chambers of New Richmond Civic Center, 156 E. First Street.
Members of law enforcement, Wisconsin Department of Corrections, St. Croix County District Attorney’s Office, St. Croix County Sheriff’s Department and other public officials will be there to present information and answer questions.
“This meeting is of adult subject matter,” Samelstad said. “As such, we are requesting that only adults attend.”
Wisconsin statutes authorize law enforcement agencies to inform the public of a sex offender if, in the discretion of the agency, the release of information will enhance community awareness and protect the public.
The individual who is the subject of the notice is not wanted by the police at this time.
“This notification is not intended to increase fear; rather, it is our belief that an informed public is a safer public,” Samelstad said. “Sex offenders have always lived in our communities; but it wasn’t until 2005 Wisconsin Act 5 was enacted that law enforcement is able to share juvenile information with the community. Citizen abuse of this information to threaten, intimidate or harass registered sex offenders will not be tolerated.”
