Soldier from Spring Valley dies in Afghanistan

Marine Cpl. Michael Nolen, 22, of Spring Valley died Monday during combat operations in Afghanistan.

A Marine corporal from western Wisconsin has become the third person from the state to be killed this month in Afghanistan.

The Pentagon said Michael Nolen, 22, of Spring Valley died Monday during combat operations. No other information was immediately released, and Nolen’s family has declined comment.

Nolen was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 2nd Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division stationed at Camp Lejeune, N.C.

"Wisconsin is extraordinarily grateful for the service and sacrifice of Cpl. Michael Nolen,” said Gov. Scott Walker in a statement. “As our nation heads into a holiday weekend, Cpl. Nolen's death is a reminder of the men and women who put their lives on the line for us, who won't be with their friends and family. We are honored by the service of those in uniform, particularly those who have made the ultimate sacrifice."

The other state residents killed in Afghanistan in June were 21-year-old Tyler Kreinz of Beloit and 19-year-old Ryan Larson of Friendship.
