The boyfriend of University of Wisconsin-Madison student Brittany Zimmermann thought she was shot in the chest when he found her cold body in their apartment on April 2.
But the medical student from Marshfield had actually called 911 almost 50 minutes earlier when a dispatcher mishandled the call and police didn’t respond.
The Wisconsin State Journal quoted search warrants as saying the 21-year-old Zimmermann was stabbed, something police never confirmed.
Police and prosecutors had six search warrants sealed and resealed. But the latest seal expired last week, and there was no effort to extend it.
No one has been arrested in Zimmermann’s killing.
The State Journal said police gathered DNA samples from several men thought to be suspects and another person’s DNA was on the victim’s body.
Her boyfriend, Jordan Gonnering, is not a suspect.
He told police he didn’t have time to notice if the intruder had taken anything but their computers were still there.
Police seized several items including a diamond ring and a purse.
Dane County’s 911 center has been under fire for mishandling Zimmermann’s call. The warrants said it came in at 12:20 p.m. April 2.
Gonnering called at 1:08 p.m. after he found the body and officers then arrived at 1:15 p.m.
