Pierce County’s 4-H internship is Katie Wendinger’s first job in Ellsworth, but the St. George, Minn., native almost has another connection here.
St. George is just outside of New Ulm, Minn., a German community known for its festivals and unique ethnic shops, said Wendinger, noting that city of 14,000 population is named after Ulm, Germany. Her hometown is headquarters for the Wendinger Band, a musical group which frequents polka events throughout the region, including Ellsworth’s annual Polka Festival.
“Pete and Paul are our neighbors,” she said of the band’s leaders, who live right down the road from her family’s farm.
