Forest County rejects millions in claims from Crandon shootings

Forest County has set the stage for a possible lawsuit from relatives of the Crandon murder victims.

The county rejected damage claims which seek millions of dollars.

Attorney Charles Bohl said the county took no action in a 120-day time limit.

It means the claims are automatically denied and the families can file civil suits against the county if they choose.

The relatives say Forest County and the city of Crandon were negligent by giving Tyler Peterson a gun and full officer status at age 20.

He killed six people last fall at the home of a girlfriend who apparently jilted him.

Peterson later committed suicide.

Earlier this year, the victims’ relatives tried but failed to get the state Legislature to pass mandatory background checks for new officers, extra training, mandatory desk duty for an officer’s first year and a minimum age for a street officer of up to 23.
