Authorities in La Crosse are defending their decision to shoot and kill a 300-pound black bear in a city park during the weekend.
Some folks wanted to know why a tranquilizer gun wasn’t used to stun the animal.
Police Sgt.Gary Hauser said a Department of Natural Resources warden at the site did not have a tranquilizer and while officers did not want to shoot the animal, they felt there was an immediate threat to public safety.
Officers first chased the black bear along a fence in Myrick Park in La Crosse.
The animal then climbed a tree above the park’s old zoo.
