More energy needed in western Wisconsin for homes than anywhere else in country

Folks in western and southeast Wisconsin need more energy to heat and cool their homes than anywhere else in the country.

Folks in western and southeast Wisconsin need more energy to heat and cool their homes than anywhere else in the country.

That’s according to a new study from the University of Michigan.

It looked at heating and cooling degree days for the nation’s 50-largest metro areas for a 30-year period ending in 2000.

Minneapolis-St. Paul and its western Wisconsin neighbors had the most degree days – 4,764.

Metro Milwaukee was ranked second in the amount of energy needed to keep homes comfortable. Chicago was third.

San Diego, Los Angeles, and San Francisco had the smallest energy needs around a quarter of what’s needed here.

Researcher Michael Sivak says it’s clear that the total energy demand tends to be dominated by heating.
