UW-River Falls’ player gets WIAC player of the year award

Ronessa Stampfli of UW-Oshkosh and Jessica Stang of UW-Whitewater are the co-pitchers of the year. They’re also among 20 players named to the all-conference team.

Also, UW-Whitewater’s Brenda Volk is the coach of the year, leading the conference champion Warhawks to the NCAA Division 3 tournament.

Howlett, a senior third baseman, is the first UW-River Falls player to win the league’s top position award. She led the WIAC with a .500 batting average, 69 hits, 17 doubles, 114 total bases, and 52 RBI’s.

Stampfli, a senior right-hander, won the top pitching honor for the fourth straight year. She struck out 215 batters in 135 and a third innings with a 1.45 ERA and a .168 opponents’ batting average.

Stampfli is the league’s all-time career leader in strikeouts with 972, and shutouts with 27.

Stang, a freshman right-hander, topped the league with a .76 ERA and a .157 opponents’ batting average.

Jill Janke of UW-Eau Claire is the sport’s top scholar-athlete.
