Wildcat girls scratch out win

The Wildcat girls’ basketball team held New Richmond scoreless over the final five minutes of the game to pull out a 37-32 nonconference victory the night of Friday, Jan. 5 at the high school gym.
The Tigers battled back from a seven-point halftime deficit to take a 32-30 lead with five minutes remaining. But the Wildcat defense clamped down and the Cats went 7-of-9 from the free throw line the rest of the way to earn the victory.
Trailing 32-30, Wildcat junior Lauren Steinhoff was fouled after making a steal and hit one of two free throws to trim the Tiger lead to one.
A blocked shot by Lexi Knotek resulted in the Tigers fouling senior Joelle Turner, and Turner made one of two shots to tie the score, 32-32, with 2:05 remaining.
Knotek came up with a steal and was fouled, putting her at the line with 1:14 remaining, and the senior made both of her shots to give River Falls the lead for good, 34-32.
The Cats were able to keep New Richmond off the free throw line down the stretch and two crucial rebounds by freshman Karly Murphy led to Steinhoff making three of four free throws in the final 18 seconds to seal the five-point victory.
Steinhoff led River Falls with 12 points and Turner scored 11 while Murphy and Amanda Rohl contributed six points each and Knotek added two. Mattie Kidder led New Richmond with 12 points.
The Wildcats benefitted from hitting 15-of-21 free throws in the game compared to 1-of-3 for the Tigers. River Falls improved to 3-7 with the win while New Richmond slipped to 5-5.
The Cats will be back in action this Friday, Jan. 11, for a Big Rivers Conference game at Hudson.
