Sebastian Larson wrestled to a third place finish and five Wildcats earned spots on the awards podium as the cats finished sixth in the Division 1 competition at the Northern Badger Wrestling Classic Friday, Dec. 28, and Saturday, Dec. 29 at River Falls High School.
Niellsville-Greenwood-Loyal won the Division 1 title with 204.5 points followed by Rhinelander with 184.5 and Luck/Frederic/Grantsburg with 179.5. The Wildcats finished sixth with 125.7.
St. Croix Central won the Division 2 title with 222.5 while Clear Lake took the Division 3 championship with 285.
In addition to Larson’s third place finish at 170 pounds, Nathan Kinneman took fourth at 132, Spencer Langer finished sixth at 145, Zach Radkey-Pechacek was ninth at 126 and Erik Dartsch was 11th at 152.
Larson won his first three matches before losing to Garrett Paulson of Clear Lake, 2-0, in the semifinals. He bounced back to defeat Max Praschak of Somerset, 8-3, in the third place match.
Kinneman also won three straight before dropping a 3-2 decision to Ben Adams of Bruce in the semifinals and losing the third place match by injury default.
Langer bounced back from a loss in the quarterfinals to win is next two matches before losing to Troy Urman of Prescott in the fifth place match. Radkey-Pechacek went 5-2 at 126 pounds, clinching ninth place with a 6-0 decision over Jake Carlson of Glenwood City, while Dartsch defeated Tyler Fleming of Rice Lake, 3-2, in his 11th place match.
Mathew Williamson won two matches at 182 pounds Mustafa Adam won twice at 220 while Logan Johnson (120), Jacob Tepp (138), Winston Bystrom (160), and Triston Lee (285) each won one match to boost the Cats’ team score.
The Wildcats return to action Thursday, Jan. 10, with a Big Rivers Conference dual at Eau Claire North.
