Registration and the first session for the local snowmobile and all-terrain vehicle (ATV) safety course will be held at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 8, at the Meyer Middle School library, 230 N. 9th St. The fee is $10 per course.

Anyone 12-years-old and born on or after Jan. 1, 1985, must have completed the safety course and received a certificate in order to operate a snowmobile or ATV.

Each certificate can only be obtained by enrollment in, and successful completion of each course — one for snowmobile and one for ATV.

Students must be 12-years-old by March 31, 2013, to sign up for these courses. Students must also obtain a DNR number (if they don’t already have one). They can be obtained at any DNR licensing station or store or by calling tollfree 1-888-936-7463.

While the courses are separate, there are many similarities, so both are taught together. Students may take one or both courses. River Falls’ students will have first preference when registering.

A parent or guardian needs to attend the registration session and sign a permission form. A brief explanation of the program will be given, then parents may leave.

Weeknight classes will be held from 6:30-8:30 p.m. and Saturday class from 8:30 a.m. to noon.

Class dates are Jan. 8, 10, 12, 15, and 17-19. Students must attend all sessions to pass.
