Girls post first win

Eleven different Wildcats broke into the scoring column and River Falls held Osceola to single-digit scoring in the final three quarters as the Wildcat girls’ basketball team picked up its first win of the season, 55-31, Dec. 11 at the high school.

Eleven different Wildcats broke into the scoring column and River Falls held Osceola to single-digit scoring in the final three quarters as the Wildcat girls’ basketball team picked up its first win of the season, 55-31, Dec. 11 at the high school.

Later in the week the Cats fell to 1-6 overall, 0-2 in the Big Rivers Conference, with a 46-34 home loss to Eau Claire Memorial.

River Falls visited Chippewa Falls and Somerset for nonconference games before taking a two-week holiday break starting Dec. 20.

Dec. 11 against Osceola (2-5), River Falls led 13-11 at the end of the first quarter before slowly widening the gap as the game went on. The Cats opened up leads of 27-15 at halftime and 43-23 at the end of three.

Joellen Turner led the home team with 10 points and Christa Anderson finished with nine while Karly Murphy scored eight and Lexi Knotek added seven. Amanda Rohl contributed five points in the victory and Amelia Kjos and McKenna Hage had four each while Abby James scored three, Kelly Skogen and Shaleen Ziriax scored two each and Lauren Steinhoff added a free throw.

At the Dec. 14 game against Eau Claire Memorial (1-4, 1-1), the Cats led 25-23 at the break before a scoreless third quarter allowed the Old Abes to take a 29-25 lead on their way to a 46-34 victory.

Knotek and Murphy led River Falls with nine points each while Anderson and Steinhoff added five points apiece. Rohl finished with four points and Turner scored two.
