District bus drivers new contract is settled

Monday night, Dec. 17, the school board approved a new one-year contract for the district’s 47 bus drivers.

Monday night, Dec. 17, the school board approved a new one-year contract for the district’s 47 bus drivers.

The pact is effective retroactively from July 1, 2012, and extends through the current school year.

Bus drivers will receive retroactive compensation for the past five-plus months that the new deal covers.

The board approved a 2.2% contract hike with most of the increase going for wages.

The new hourly wage scale is based on working experience.

That experience follows a five-step grid. The hourly pay range is $17.70 to $19.30. Bus drivers on field trips will earn $15.15 an hour.

Before the regular meeting, school board members in a closed session voted to expel a high school freshman girl.

The alleged violation was for marijuana possession in November at the high school.

According to Superintendent Tom Westerhaus, the girl will be expelled until Nov. 1, 2013.

However, if she fulfills various conditions set by the school board, including drug counseling, she’s eligible to return for high school classes at the start of the second semester, Jan. 28.

Westerhaus said while the school district has zero tolerance for students using, selling or possessing drugs on school grounds, violators who “demonstrate they’re serious about changing their lives” are given a second chance to return early.

Monday night’s expulsion was the first of the 2012-13 school year.
