High School students honored a classmate they lost to a car accident May 18 by raising $1,000 and giving it to a local charity that works to raise awareness about teen-driver issues.
Students and advisors on the Class of 2013 leadership team and prom committee allocated money made from admissions to the Grand March prom night this year to give to the St. Croix Valley Restorative Justice Program.
SCVRJP offers many programs, among them Teen Driving Circles, in which participants share a public commitment to prevent car crashes among teenaged drivers.
SCVRJP’s research says crashes are the No. 1 cause of death for people between the ages of 16-24.
A circle begins with a guest speaker -- usually someone who has a personal experience that highlights the consequences of unsafe driving.
Since 2009, about 650 kids have attended a Teen Driving Circle.
The local nonprofit organization partners with the local Police Department to present the programs, which cost $40 to attend and are sometimes court ordered.
SCVRJP’s Director Kris Miner says the next Teen Driving Circle will be Tuesday, Dec. 4, at the SCVRJP Center, 215 N. Second St., Suite 108.
She said all funds coming to SCVRJP via fees and community support go toward providing the center’s free services, such as Restorative Response for the loved ones of people who die suddenly and unnaturally by suicide, homicide, car crash, drug overdose or accident.
