The Wildcat football team marched 76 yards in the final 2 minutes only to have the potential game-winning drive stall at the Eau Claire Memorial 14 yard line in a 21-17 loss to the Old Abes Friday night, Sept. 28, at David Smith Stadium at Ramer Field.
The Wildcat defense came up with a big 4th down stop at its own 10 yard line with just over two minutes remaining before quarterback Alex Call hooked up with Brad Freeborn for gains of 11 and 49 yards to the Eau Claire Memorial 30. A 16-yard pass to Josiah Harris gave River Falls a 1st-and-10 at the Old Abe with 1:30 remaining, but four straight incompletions allowed Memorial to escape with the win.
Call and Freeborn hooked up for a 42-yard touchdown in the first quarter to give the Cats a 7-0 lead. Call broke free for a 72-yard touchdown run to tie the score, 14-14, early in the second quarter and kicked a 23-yard field goal with 10:21 remaining in the game to make the final 21-17.
See the Oct. 3 print edition of the River Falls Journal for more on the game.
