River Falls scored on its first two possessions of the second half to cut a 13-point halftime deficit to 13-9, but Menomonie held off the Wildcats for a 26-15 victory in a battle of undefeated teams Friday night at David Smith Stadium at Ramer Field.

Colton Jones recovered a fumble on Menomonie’s opening possession of the second half to set up a 35-yard field Alex Call field goal. On the second play of the Cats’ ensuing possession, Call broke free for a 55-yard touchdown run to cut the Mustangs’ lead to 13-9.

Menomonie added a touchdown late in the third quarter and another early in the fourth to extend its lead to 26-9. Call found Brad Freeborn for a 49-yard gain down to the two before Sam Lenzen took a direct snap and plunged over for a touchdown on the following play. Call’s extra point attempt was blocked and the Mustangs’ led 26-15.

The Wildcats had a 1st-and-10 at the Mustangs’ 22 with just under three minutes remaining, but Call’s 4th-and-29 pass intended for Call near the goal line was batted away and Menomonie escaped with the victory.

Menomonie improved to 4-0 overall, 3-0 and tied for first place in the Big Rivers Conference with Hudson, 49-14 winners over Eau Claire North Friday night. The Wildcats fell to 3-1 overall, 2-1 in BRC play.
