Bignell attended UW-River Falls from 1984-89, during which time he was editor of the Student Voice and Prologue literary magazine. He received the Chancellor’s Award in 1988. He now lives in Hudson, after spending several years in Southern California.

Though traditionally a writer of prose — Bignell is an award-winning journalist and the author of successful guidebooks about hiking with children — poetry seemed the best medium for expressing this collection’s themes.

“Poetry may very well be the last refuge of passionate expression in modern society,” Bignell said. “Our prose is so intent on simply expressing information quickly and skims over the surface of emotions. There’s still a need for emotional expression, though — humans are more emotion than reason, I’d argue.’
