Letter: Dear voters, the choice is yours: Fact or fiction?

Paul Ryan, in his speech before the Republican Party Convention on Wednesday, Aug. 29, began with fiction, saying: President Obama wouldn’t save the GM (General Motors) plant in Ryan’s hometown of Janesville.

Fact: The plant was locked up in December 2008 before Mr. Obama became president. The decision to close the plant had been made over several years.

More of Ryan’s fiction: President Obama will take $716 million from Medicare recipients to pay for the Affordable Care Act (“Obama Care”).

Fact: The anticipated spending cuts will come from payments to providers, NOT recipients. These cuts will be possible due to efficiencies implemented in the Medicare system over the next 10 years.

And, the same cuts that are projected in the ACA are also in Paul Ryan’s own budget, which Ryan would then use for other projects outside of health care.

Ryan’s fiction: President Obama did nothing with (“walked away from”) the recommendations from the bipartisan Simpson-Boles commission.

Fact: Congressman Ryan was on the commission that developed the Simpson-Boles plan. With his no vote, and the votes of other Republicans on the commission, the plan could not proceed to the Congress for an up or down vote.
