Letter: Thinking and Republicans simply don’t go together

Perhaps the most disturbing thing about hearing a United States congressman tell us about the intricacies of female reproduction and that unique ability to avoid being impregnated by a rapist by getting sperm to do the backstroke was that this kind of make-it-up-as-you-go that’s become a staple in Republican thinking.

It doesn’t have to make sense for people to say it’s so.

Think of all those people who believe global warming is a hoax.

Think of all of the Republican candidates in the primaries who deny evolution.

Think of Mitt Romney campaigning on a promise to get the economy going by returning to the same economic policies that caused the worst crisis since the Great Depression.

Think about the ‘birthers’ who aren’t annoyed that no lawyers are pressing charges of an illegal presidency, but are happy to shrug off the facts as meaningless.

Think of Mitt Romney, using a white board and a marker, to demonstrate to all the quiet children how easy it is to lie.

Think of Paul Ryan, who within a minute of claiming that a fertilized egg is a person, goes on to deny that he would outlaw any forms of birth control.

I use the word “think” because I want to stress how much Republicans have come to rely upon the will to say something is true as the only standard for believing it to be so.

A woman wiggling her nose or pressing her belly-button as a way to get the unwelcome guest to do the backstroke is not so outlandish in their world.

Since when has hard science had the last word for Republicans? Since when have they balked at lying to the American public?

Can’t remember when, can you? I didn’t think so.
