Some of the many, many supporters completed a project the afternoon of Thursday, Aug. 23, that honors and remembers the late Schaffhausen sisters. In the Highview Meadows neighborhood park, near where they lived, now sit three memorial trees and a bench that reads: “In Loving Memory of Amara, Sophie and Cea.”
A memorial tree standing in the small city park of the Highview Meadows. Each of the 15-foot-tall trees is an autumn-blaze maple, which yield brilliant color in the fall and a shady canopy during the summer. Project workers tied a white ribbon around each tree.
As they dug holes and secured the bench, two unidentified neighborhood girls who were playmates with the late sisters, watched and said they wanted to be the first to sit on the bench and think about their friends.
People from River Falls and Hudson contributed, collaborated or both to make the memorial happen, including in River Falls -- the city, Earthworks Nursery, Luther Memorial Church and the CHILD Center and in Hudson -- Halvorson Concrete Concepts.
The girls died last month. Their father is awaiting trial in connection with their deaths.
