Two inmates were on the loose at midday July 18 from the state’s Black River Correctional Center near Black River Falls. At the same time, a shotgun and ammunition were stolen when a vehicle was burglarized near the prison.

Authorities were not immediately sure if the break-in was related to the escapes of 18-year-old James Misleveck and 29-year-old James Newman. Both were reported missing around 11:15 p.m. July 17, and they were last seen wearing tan T-shirts, gray shorts, and tennis shoes.

A search of the area came up empty. Authorities urged people to be on the lookout for Newman and Misleveck – and if they spot them, they should not approach them and call law enforcement immediately.

Black River is a minimum-security lockup which was re-dedicated as a boot camp in 2004. Officials say the boot-camp program gives inmates the chance to get the resources they need to return to the community and remain crime and drug free.
