Letter: Here’s my defense of popular fiction

According to my husband, I’m a “Romance Maven.”

As such, I must take issue with the broad sweep against popular fiction made by book reviewer Dave Wood in the June 14 River Falls Journal.

Anyone who reads books knows that not all books are created equal. There are fine writers of all genres, as well as those who should never have bothered.

I enjoy women’s fiction. I like a good story with interesting characters who have a unique perspective on life.

These stories take me to a place where day-to-day challenges disappear.

For a while, I’m transported into a life not my own by stories with heart, wisdom, and humor.

My question is as follows: Are all biographies, mysteries, science fiction novels, and westerns free of smut?

Oh...wait! It appears only women’s fiction is smutty, open to criticism, and not worth reading.

I cry “foul”! Women’s fiction is not crap or a waste of time.

People read books for pleasure, whatever that may be.
