Police responded June 22 to an apartment in Hurley where the manager reported that 85-year-old resident Leo J. Driscoll had threatened him with a gun, which he managed to wrestle away from Driscoll. He went back into his apartment, where he reportedly had more weapons.
Officers say the man refused to talk to them, so they eventually cleared the building and called the SWAT team. Reports say when the team entered Driscoll’s apartment, he was holding a rifle and was fatally shot.
No details about the shooting have been released. To avoid a possible conflict of interest, it is being investigated by detectives from Vilas County. Several officers are on administrative leave while the case is wrapped up.
About 40 residents were evacuated for a day. Driscoll had no previous criminal record in Hurley.
