Alexi Bopray scored off a corner kick in the 57th minute, and goalkeeper Paige Meyer made nine saves, including a diving stop along the left post with roughly 20 seconds remaining, to lead River Falls to a 1-0 victory over D.C. Everest in a WIAA Division 1 sectional semifinal Thursday in Weston.
The Evergreens outshot the Wildcats 10-3, but couldn’t get a shot past Meyer. Meanwhile, Bopray got a head on a corner kick from Jenna Kizlick midway through the second half and deflected it into the goal for the only scoring in the game.
Third-seeded River Falls, now 13-6-1, moves on to face undefeated and top-seed Eau Claire Memorial (23-0-2) in the sectional championship game Saturday, June 9, at 1 p.m. in New Richmond. The winner clinches a berth in next week’s WIAA State Tournament in Milwaukee.
The Wildcats are the last team to beat Eau Claire Memorial, downing the Old Abes 1-0 in last year’s sectional title game to earn their first-ever trip to state. Eau Claire Memorial won both meetings with the Wildcats during the regular season, 3-0 April 24 in Eau Claire and 2-1 May 17 in River Falls.
