Authorities arrested a 16-year-old Campbellsport boy for the shooting of a 7-year-old girl with a bow and arrow. The boy is being held in a juvenile-detention facility after his arrest May 31 and faces possible charges of second-degree reckless injury and obstructing police.

Fond du Lac County Sheriff Mick Fink said the boy and a 17-year-old male companion claimed they were shooting at squirrels near downtown Campbellsport on May 21 when they heard a girl scream. One of the arrows had flown into the back of 7-year-old Aryanna Schneeberg, who was playing with friends outside her house.

Doctors at Milwaukee Children’s Hospital repaired damage to Aryanna’s spleen liver, lung, and diaphragm. The girl is now recovering at home.

Investigators figure that the arrow was fired about 80 yards to the north. Sheriff Fink said the boys were afraid to come forward with the information, fearing what would happen to them.

Only the 16-year-old – the alleged shooter – is in custody. The 17-year-old is still being referred to prosecutors, who will determine what his involvement was and charge him if necessary.

Campbellsport Police said there’s an ordinance in the community against shooting bows and arrows within the village limits. A $10,000 reward fund was created for information leading to an arrest, and deputies are reviewing tips to see if the reward will be given out.
