Wildcat golfers qualify for state; softball, baseball win playoff openers

The River Falls boys’ golf team finished second at the Marshfield sectional to qualify for next week’s WIAA State Tournament, and the Wildcat softball and baseball team each won one-run games in their respective playoff openers in high school action Tuesday afternoon.
Garrett Loomis fired a 78 to lead all golfers at the Marshfield Sectional as the Wildcats finished second to qualify for state for the first time since 2006. Superior won the 8-team sectional title with a score of 331 while River Falls earned the second qualifying spot with a score of 337.
Holden Ohlsen tied for seventh with a round of 82 while Blake Heiman added an 87 and Mike Xiong finished with a 90 to round out the Wildcat scoring.
The WIAA State Boys’ Golf Tournament will take place Monday and Tuesday, June 4-5, at University Ridge Golf Course in Madison.
In WIAA regional softball action, Hayley Heschke hit a solo home run in the top of the seventh to lift sixth-seeded River Falls to a 3-2 victory over No. 3 Hudson in a semifinal game Tuesday in Hudson.
Carlie Christensen’s two-run homer in the second gave the Wildcats a 2-0 lead before Heschke snapped a 2-2 tie with her homer in the seventh. Bailey Ullom went the distance on the mound to earn the victory.
The Wildcats will face second-seeded Eau Claire North in the regional final Thursday at 5 p.m. in Eau Claire.
The Wildcat baseball team also won its regional semifinal, scoring two runs in the bottom of the sixth to erase a 2-1 Superior lead and post a 3-2 victory over the Spartans.
Alex Call tripled in Sam Barr with the tying run and scored the go-ahead run on a sacrifice fly by Ryan Kusilek. James Witt pitched three innings of scoreless relief to earn the win on the mound.
The Cats advanced to face top-seeded Stevens Point Thursday at 5 p.m. in Stevens Point.
