Artsminded: Classic tale rings true in modern times

“A horse, a horse, my kingdom for a horse” — so uttered a desperate king in the Shakespearean tragedy entitled “Richard III”.
The recent UW-River Falls theatre performances, true to Shakespearean language but staged in contemporary dress in the seat of modern government, captured the inevitability of tragedy when power and authoritarianism create conditions for their own demise.
For those of us fortunate enough to attend it was a well presented cautionary tale, at once classic and immediate. Admission was gratis. What a gift!
Speaking of gifts, last Saturday night the River Falls Community Arts Base celebrated its 17th Annual Spring Gala.
With the Jazz Age brought alive by tuxedos and flapper attire it was a cool and colorful event indeed! People danced the night away as fine art, music and food provided a constant sense of creative abundance.
A community party the likes of this one is rare. Importantly, it also serves as a major fund raiser and member recruitment event for CAB, the premier, all volunteer arts organization in our area.
Thanks to all who came and thanks, CAB, for another fine Gala. If you weren’t there, make a note to come to the 18th annual event next spring. CAB welcomes your membership which, incidentally, will give you a nice discount on future Gala tickets as well as other excellent premiums.

I’d be remiss not to mention the many fine concerts, senior and faculty recitals that have graced Abbott Concert Hall and the Falcon’s Nest on the UW-RF campus almost daily for weeks.
The most culturally dense period of the year here in western Wisconsin is winding down. However, through the summer there are exciting concert series and other happenings to look forward to.
In the weeks ahead stay tuned for specifics in this column.
“Spring is sprung, The grass is riz, When and where the culture is?”
