Carefully, Cascade work carries on

Construction along Cascade Avenue continues and has its share of challenges, as shown in this photo from Tuesday, April 17, when a heavy-equipment operator cautiously digs between the “spaghetti” of infrastructure that includes a 12-inch gas line, as well as a water main and electrical and telephone lines. The week of April 16 on the big Cascade Avenue reconstruction project began with snow and rain, which doesn’t stop work but does shift the schedule a bit. Work continued on installing sewer and storm-water lines in the area of Spruce/Second streets, as well as the water main from Second to Fourth streets.

Work for the week also included felling trees slated for removal and taking out existing streetlights and replacing them with temporary lighting.

The first week after closing Cascade, the project mostly involved erecting security fencing, traffic blockades and detour signage, along with delivery of construction equipment.

Crews began during the second week of street closure to remove existing pavement and haul it away. They also began work at Spruce Street on the installation of a new water main.

The Cascade Avenue project has a web site on which are posted progress updates, including street-by-street information about the status of pedestrian crosswalks.

The site also has links to Twitter and Facebook. See the project Web site at www.uwrf.edu/CascadeProject/.
