The 1940 U.S. Federal Census images were released on April 2, 72 years after the census was taken.
Everyone is talking about this important census, taken in the years following the Great Depression and just before the start of World War II. Your ancestors may be difficult to find in the census since the images are not yet indexed. It is also helpful to know the enumeration district in which they lived.
The 1940 U.S. Census Community Project is seeking volunteers to help index the census. Come join the St. Croix Valley Genealogical Society in a grassroots effort to index the census and make it easier for all to use.
SCVGS is a partner with www.
FamilySearch.org in this effort.
An indexing party is scheduled for Tuesday, April 24, at the River Falls Public Library from 6 to 8 p.m. in the main floor meeting room. You will learn how to download the indexing software, sign-up to index, and try your hand at actual indexing.
Other indexers will be on hand to answer your indexing questions. If you already have the indexing software downloaded on your computer, download a couple of batches of the 1940 Census before you attend. If you have a laptop computer, please bring it along or plan to watch over someone's shoulder to learn how to index.
You do not need to be a member of SCVGS in order to participate. If you have any questions, contact Darcy at 715-425-9978.
