Tuesday night, March 27, the City Council unanimously approved a sewer rate hike of 8.5%. The change should be reflected in June utility bills. The last sewer rate increase of 13.8% came two years ago.

A low return on investments, slow residential growth, and big utility projects for Cascade Avenue, Radio Road and the South Fork interceptor line were said to be contributing factors for this latest rate increase.

The state’s Public Service Commission also granted the city an increase in water rates of 3%.

The city had applied for a 13% hike.

City water rates haven’t been increased since 1997.
