MADISON – According to information released last week by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), fraudulent letters that claim to be from the USDA have been sent by fax to individuals and businesses in Wisconsin.
These false letters bear the USDA logo and seal and are signed by an individual identified as “Frank Rutenberg” and using the title “Senior Procurement Officer.” The letters seek personal information from recipients, but under no circumstances should recipients provide personal and financial information in response to this letter.
USDA officials learned March 16 about the letters, which have been received in Alabama, Nebraska, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin but may have also been sent to other states. USDA is investigating this matter through the Office of the Inspector General.
Again, recipients should not respond to the letters and should not supply the requested information. Anyone who suspects they have received such a letter or have questions, contact the USDA at procurement.policy@dm.usda.gov or 202-720-9448.
