Authorities are investigating after a state justice official shot himself in the hand.
Fond du Lac Police said 54-year-old Tony Barthuly was cleaning a handgun on Feb. 15 when it accidentally went off. Barthuly used to be Fond du Lac’s police chief; now he’s the director of training and standards for the state Justice Department.
He went to a Fond du Lac hospital for treatment and was later transferred to the Appleton Medical Center where he was in good condition at last word. Fond du Lac police captain Steve Klein said any accidental discharge of a weapon needs to be investigated.
And because of Barthuly’s ties to the police force, investigators from the Sheboygan Police Department are looking into the incident.
