Students swallow dose of reality

A financial-literacy event Friday, Jan. 13, at the high school included nationally known keynote speaker Chad Foster, as well as activities afterward aimed at teaching students about realistic money management.

    A financial-literacy event Friday, Jan. 13, at the high school included nationally known keynote speaker Chad Foster, as well as activities afterward aimed at teaching students about realistic money management. Though all grades participated in different activities, seniors spent a large part of the day shopping in the ‘Reality Store.’ After receiving a randomly assigned vocation, marital status and salary, each student priced the aspects of independent life. About 60 local volunteers helped work at the store -- giving the shoppers plain facts about the cost of health and child care, housing, utilities, pets, charitable giving and more. Participants observed that some kids were shocked at how much child care costs and opted not to have kids. One “assigned” couple commented that they had to “give their children back.” Many wanted pets and few opted to check out the charitable giving table.
