HUDSON -- A jury trial has been set for May 8-10 for a 26-year-old River Falls man accused of shooting his friend to death last June.
Anthony P. Velure, 500 Kennedy St., River Falls, is charged with first-degree reckless homicide and homicide by reckless use of a firearm in the June 27 death of Joshua R. Kurer, 24.
The incident occurred in Kurer’s apartment at 1473 Riverside Drive as Velure allegedly tried to convince his buddy to go out drinking.
According to police reports, the two men knew each other from serving together in the Army National Guard in River Falls. Both had been drinking earlier that day.
Kurer apparently changed his mind about going out again after inviting Velure over.
Kurer was hit in the chest by a .410 round.
Efforts by Velure, a roommate and later police officers and paramedics failed to revive the injured man.
He was pronounced dead at the scene by the county medical examiner.
The trial dates were set in St. Croix County Court during a hearing held late Tuesday afternoon.
Velure, a 2003 River Falls High School graduate, worked as a security guard for Northern Tier Energy of St. Paul Park, Minn., at the time of the incident.
