Hours after the 14th-ranked UW-River Falls women’s basketball team defeated 8th-ranked UW-Stevens Point, 67-63, Wednesday night at Karges Center, the unranked Falcon men followed suit by knocking off the 13th-ranked Pointer men, 73-70 to move into sole possession of first place in the WIAC.
It’s the first time in 21 years the Falcon men and women have beaten Stevens Point in the same season, never mind the same night.
Tiffany Gregorich scored 17 points and Alise Holst added 15, all in the second half, to lift the UWRF women over Point in the first game of the doubleheader. The win leaves the Falcons a half-game behind UW-Eau Claire at the top of the WIAC standings with a mark of 4-0 (12-1 overall). Stevens Point dropped to 3-1 in conference play (11-2 overall).
In the men’s 8 p.m. game, Shane Manor hit two free throws with 20 seconds remaining to put the Falcons up by three, 71-68. A layup by Stevens Point’s Tyler Tillema with 14 seconds left made it a one-point game before Falcon freshman Taylor Peterson hit a layup with four second left to put UWRF back up by three, 73-70. The Pointers couldn’t get a shot off in the final four seconds and UWRF walked off with the win.
Four Falcons finished in double figures in scoring, led by Manor’s 21. Ollie White contributed 16 points and Brian Kimble scored 11 while Zach Peterson had 10 points and a team-high nine rebounds off the bench.
The win moves the Falcons into sole possession of first place in the WIAC with a record of 4-0 (10-3 overall). Stevens Point slipped into a tie for second place with UW-Whitewater, both at 3-1. The Falcons travel to Whitewater this Saturday, Jan. 7.
