Smokers: Look here if you want to quit
Many Wisconsin residents make New Year’s resolutions, only to abandon them early in the year.
Many Wisconsin residents make New Year’s resolutions, only to abandon them early in the year.
But for those who want to quit smoking, they can now take control of their lives by calling 1-800-QUIT-NOW (1-800-784-8669) to get free coaching, medicine, and an individualized plan from the Wisconsin Tobacco Quit Line.
“Many smokers who make New Year’s resolutions don’t have a solid plan to accomplish it,” said Quit Line Coordinator Kate Kobinsky. “Preparation is key for most goals, but especially for smokers before the quit date. Each person who calls 1-800-QUIT-NOW will get an individualized plan to help them stay on course and reach their goal. And, they can call back for continued support.”
The Quit Line ships a two-week starter kit with booklets and medications at no charge.
The service has helped people make good on their resolutions for more than a decade, fielding more than 180,000 calls since its inception in May 2001.
Tobacco use remains the single largest preventable cause of disease and premature death in the US, killing more than 7,000 Wisconsinites every year and 445,000 nationwide.
Despite this, more than 46 million Americans still smoke, including 900,000 Wisconsinites.
Nearly 7,000 Wisconsin kids become new smokers every year, and 15% of pregnant Wisconsinites smoke -- above the national average.
The Quit Line is managed by the UW Center for Tobacco Research and Intervention and funded by the Wisconsin Department of Health Services
