A group of fifth-grade students at St. Bridget Parish School are finding lots of new learning opportunities in a 154-year-old local institution -- the community newspaper.

Students in Mrs. Loretta Wilbur's class began studying the River Falls Journal a week ago, watching for clues to determine the difference between editorial content like news stories and paid advertising, like legal notices and garage sales.

On Wednesday, Dec. 14th, Journal publisher Steve Dzubay visited the class and shared information about how the business operates and answered questions.

Students in the class include Mara Parsons, Liam McDonnell, Eryn Herrera, Zach Petersen, Marcella Hicks, Keagan Mears, McKenna Mears, Lilly Whall, Elsa Putzier, Timmy Leary, Garnett Ripley, Brenna Nowak, Claire Wulf, and Sophia Willger.

School principal Sue Steckbauer said St. Bridget’s has maintained a tradition of excellence in academics, rooted in faith, and nurturing of academic and personal achievement.

"The quality of our faculty and small class sizes provide a learning environment that challenges all of our students, encourages participation, and promotes a faith-centered sense of service and leadership," she noted in a message on the school's web site.
