Duane A. Herald, age 92, of Baldwin, Wis., died on Thursday, Dec. 8, at the Park View Home in Woodville.
Duane was born on Aug. 31, 1919, in Spring Valley, Wis., the son of Lee and Helma (Hanson) Herald. He was raised in Spring Valley where he graduated from high school in 1937. He furthered his education at the University of Wisconsin - Stout where he received his degree in teaching. He taught industrial arts for Chippewa Falls High School for a short time. During this time, he joined the Civil Service in Chicago in December of 1941. He was recruited by the United States Navy. He served during World War II prior to being honorably discharged in November of 1945. In 1946, he was united in marriage to Anita Peterson. This union was blessed with daughter, Trudy. Together, they made Baldwin their home. She would later precede him in death.
As a young man, he worked for Jostens in Owatonna for a short time before beginning a long and prosperous time for Herald & Zillmann Chevrolet in Baldwin. He basically did everything there, from driving tow truck to selling cars; the only thing he didn’t do was get under the hood. Following this, he was a leading force to help build the “new” Baldwin Care Center. He served as their first administrator and worked there for 15 proud years. In 1992, Duane was united in marriage to Jeannette Howard. They have lived in Baldwin their entire married life.
Duane was a former Village of Baldwin board member, active member of Gethsemane Lutheran Church, and helped construct the current church. He was a lifetime member of Collins Masonic Lodge and the Baldwin American Legion Post. Duane was a respected and practical man. He enjoyed woodworking and fixing things; why buy new when you can fix it! He also enjoyed boating on Balsam Lake and pheasant hunting in the Dakotas.
Duane is survived by his wife, Jeannette; sister, Jean Burke of Baldwin; daughter, Trudy (Rich) Loney of River Falls; stepsons, Bruce (Maggie) Howard of Versailles, Ky., Kyle (Donna) Howard of Woodville; granddaughters Kristin Loney (fiancé Gavin Wiersma) of River Falls, Emily (Paul) Ware of West Milwaukee, Jenny Loney of River Falls; step-grandchildren, Justin (Nicole) Howard of Fountain, Minn., Jordan (Marie) Howard of Madison, Wis., Tyler Howard of Sun Prairie, Wis., Sarah (Jonathan) Borders of Lexington, Ky., Amanda Howard of Pensacola, Fla., Allison Howard of Lexington; and step-great-grandchildren, Mason and Ellie Howard.
He was preceded in death by his parents; first wife, Anita; and his grandson.
