UW-River Falls Modern Language Department is hosting an authentic Japanese kimono and Chinese garment exhibition in the Harriet Barry Gallery space in the Chalmer Davee Library starting Monday, Dec. 5, through Christmas -- maybe a bit longer.

An open reception will be from 1-2 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 8.

On Thursday, Dec. 15, there are three open presentations (11-11:50 a.m., 12-12:50 p.m. and 2-2:50 p.m.) in which Magara Maeda of the Modern Language Department is going to discuss the traditional role of Kimonos in Japanese culture and give a demonstration on how to put one on properly.

All three presentations will cover the kimono and there will also be traditional Chinese garments on exhibit and those will be discussed as part of the last two presentations.

Magara Maeda, Japanese language instructor, will talk about the historical/cultural background of Japanese kimono for different occasions and demonstrate how to put on kimono. The talk will also include information about traditional Japanese ‘Shinto-style’ wedding ceremony.

Ying Wang and Liyuan Feng, Chinese students at UWRF, give a brief introduction on each minority, including their geography, costumes, food, language, music and wedding ceremonies.

Hours are Monday-Thursdays: 7:30 a.m.-1:00 a.m.; Fridays: 7:30 a.m.-7:00 p.m.; Saturdays: 9:00 a.m.-6:00 p.m.; and Sundays: Noon-1:00 a.m.

The exhibit is free and the general public is invited to all scheduled events and to visit at their leisure.
