A driver from Winnipeg, Canada, 61-year-old Victor Giesbrecht, might have saved his own life when he stopped to help a motorist with a flat tire the night of Nov. 5, on I-94 about nine miles east of Menomonie.

Giesbecht and his wife pulled over to help Sara Berg fix a blown-out tire. He finished the job and was just getting back on the road when Berg noticed his wife waving frantically as Giesbecht began having a heart attack.

Nurse’s assistant Lisa Meyer of Eau Claire was an occupant in Berg’s vehicle, and she jumped into action administering CPR to him. Rescuers soon arrived with a defibrillator to restart Griesbecht’s heart.

As of Nov. 8, he was in serious-but-stable condition at an Eau Claire hospital. State Patrol Sgt. Michael Newton said if the Griesbechts had not stopped their car to help, they might not have had immediate help.

Berg says “someone up above” must have brought the two parties together.
