Wildcats top Tigers in football opener
River Falls scored a pair of fourth quarter touchdowns to break open a close game and post a 26-13 victory over New Richmond in the 2013 high school football opener Friday night in New Richmond.
Leading 14-13 with one quarter to play, Sam Lenzen returned a punt 70 yards for a touchdown to give the Wildcats some breathing room and Jon Krueger iced the win with a 2-yard touchdown run with 1:09 remaining.
River Falls scored on its first possession of the game when Greg Matheson capped an 84-yard drive with a 20-yard scoring run. After a missed extra point attempt, the Tigers answered with a long scoring drive of their own to take a 7-6 lead.
The Tigers took advantage of a Wildcat fumble early in the second quarter and scored to take a 13-6 lead, but River Falls went into the half leading 14-13 thanks to a 1-yard TD plunge and two-point conversion by Adrian Paurus.
After a scoreless third quarter, Lenzen’s punt return gave River Falls a 20-13 lead with 10:03 remaining. Krueger made the final 26-13 when he capped a 45-yard drive with a 2-yard touchdown run with 1:09 left.
