Wildcat golfers heading to state

The River Falls girls’ golf team finished three strokes behind first-place Eau Claire North at Tuesday’s WIAA Division 1 sectional tournament to qualify for the WIAA State Tournament Monday and Tuesday, Oct. 14-15, in Madison.

Eau Claire North won the sectional title, played at Forest Hills Golf Course in La Crosse, with a team score of 359 with River Falls right behind with 362.

Senior Rachael Mayer paced the Wildcats with a fourth place score of 86 while junior Sydney Brunholzl tied for fifth with 88. Senior Abby James carded a 93 and senior Maddie Wagner finished at 95 to round out the Wildcats’ team score while senior Hallie Hauer scored 99.

Tomah’s Danielle Ducklow defeated New Richmond’s Alex Wheeler in a one-hole playoff to earn medalist honors after both players finished with 82. Both players advanced to state as individual qualifiers along with New Richmond’s Megan Chelberg, who won a three-person playoff that included Hudson’s Jill Wanner after each player posted scores of 88.

New Richmond finished third in the final team standings with 370 while Hudson was fourth with 382.

The WIAA Girls State Golf Championships will be played Monday and Tuesday, Oct. 14-15, at University Ridge Golf Course in Madison.
