Immunizations/vaccines protect against disease by inducing immunity. The common-sense principle still applies it is better to keep people from falling ill than to treat them once they are ill.

Public health aims to assure the health of the public to prevent the spread of disease through assessment, treatment, education, rehabilitation and through policy development. As part of that mission, the Pierce County Public Health Department offers vaccines at three regularly scheduled immunization clinics: River Falls, Plum City and Ellsworth. Childhood vaccines as well as adult boosters and flu shots are offered (depending on availability) at these clinic sites.

For a limited time, the department is offering the following vaccines free through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA): Hepatitis A (two dose series); Hepatitis B (three dose series); MMR--Measles, Mumps and Rubella; Tdap--Tetanus Toxoid, Reduced Diphtheria Toxoid and Acellular Pertussis (through age 64); Td--Tetnus and Diphtheria; Varicella (Chickenpox); Human Papillomavirus--Gardasil (three dose series, women or men--ages 18-26).

Recommended adult immunizations are:

--Tetanus-Diphtheria Vaccine (all adults, every 10 years);

--Influenza (Flu) Vaccine (adults 50 and older);

--Pneumococcal Vaccine (adults 65 and older);

--Hepatitis B Vaccine (adults at risk);

--Measles-Mumps-Rubella (MMR) Vaccine (susceptible adults);
