UW-RF men win 2 of 3
The UW-River Falls men's basketball team won back-to-back games over MIAC opponents early last week before seeing its three-game winning streak come to an end Saturday at sixth-ranked UW-Whitewater.
Four Falcons hit double figures in scoring in a 77-44 win over Macalester last Monday and former Wildcat Jake Voeltz recorded his first career double-double in an 81-76 victory the following night at Hamline. But the Warhawks opened Saturday's game with an 11-0 run on their way to a 90-68 win over UW-RF.
The Falcons, now 8-5 overall, 2-2 in the WIAC, will face another nationally-ranked team, No. 5 UW-Stevens Point (9-2, 3-0), Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Karges Center. Three of the Falcons five losses this season have been to top-10 ranked teams.
Last week got off to a good start for UW-RF as the team returned from holiday break with a convincing 77-44 victory over winless Macalester (0-9) at Karges Center. Jontae Koonkaew led the way with 16 points and Voeltz finished with 13 while Wade Guerin added 12 and Danny Johnson scored 10. Voeltz and Guerin pulled down seven rebounds apiece while Koonkaew also had six rebounds, five assists and three steals. Voeltz also contributed three steals and two blocked shots in the win.
The Falcons led 40-19 at the break. Colin Keeley and David Lewin led Macalester with eight points apiece. The Scots were 0-for-15 from three-point range.
Tuesday night at Sutton Arena in St. Paul, Voeltz finished with a career-high 22 points and 12 rebounds to record his first collegiate double-double. Koonkaew just missed a triple-double with 18 points, eight rebounds and nine assists in an 81-76 victory over the Pipers (3-5).
Voeltz scored 16 of his 22 points in the second half to help the Falcons overcome a 35-33 halftime deficit.
UW-RF took the lead for good, 60-58, on a three-pointer by Aaron Anderson with 7:39 remaining. A jumper and a free throw by Voeltz and a jumper by Brady Hannigan stretched the lead to seven, 65-58.
Hamline got to within a basket with 4:22 left and trailed by three, 75-72, with 30 seconds remaining before Koonkaew hit six straight free throws to seal the win.
Anderson finished with 13 points in the victory while Spencer Shelman added 10. Eric Klute and Tanner Anderson led Hamline with 15 points each.
In their return to WIAC play Saturday in Whitewater, the Falcons quickly found themselves down 11-0 and trailed 54-30 at the break on their way to a 90-68 defeat.
Whitewater shot a blistering 61.7 percent from the floor, including 10-of-19 from beyond the arc, while outrebounding the Falcons 36-24 to improve to 11-2 overall, 3-1 in the WIAC.
Voeltz led UW-RF with 18 points and four rebounds while Shelman added 10 points. Guerin finished with nine points and four boards while Koonkaew also finished with nine points and dished out eight assists.
Five Warhawks finished in double figures, led by Myles McKay with 24 points.
