The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire won its first national small college softball championship Monday, 4-3 over UW-Whitewater in nine innings in Salem, Va.

Jill Janke hit a walk-off home run for the fourth-seeded Blugolds, who ended the year at 36-11.

It was the first time two WIAC schools competed for the NCAA Division 3 crown and only the third time in any sport.

Jenny Ross pitched all nine innings for the win, giving up three runs on eight hits with six strikeouts.

In four tournament games, Ross had a 1.21 ERA.

Suzanne Gersich hit a two-run homer for UW-Whitewater giving the Warhawks 68 on the year which is a school and league record and the second-highest in Division 3 history.

Freshman Jessica Stang suffered a complete game loss, giving up four runs on 10 hits with six strikeouts. She struck out 40 in the national finals.

UW-Whitewater advanced to the title game earlier Monday with a 2-1 win over Louisiana College.
