David J. Riley, was initially identified as being from Afton, but Learfield News reported early Friday that he was from New Richmond.

Riley was a passenger on a speed boat owned and apparently operated by Patrick Puhalla, 46, of Bayport, Minn. He and another man, Daniel M. Schultz, 55, of Hudson, were both taken to Regions Hospital in St. Paul by River Falls Area Ambulance after fishermen discovered the crash about 11:45 p.m., Wednesday. A Regions spokesperson said Friday afternoon Schultz was treated and released, while they had no information on Puhalla.

Riley was pronounced dead at the scene by Pierce County Medical Examiner John Worsing.

Authorities say the boat was traveling upstream along the Wisconsin side near Kinnickinnic State Park when it struck a rock face.

Officials said it was extremely dark, and a lack of moonlight might have been a factor.

The accident remains under investigation by the Wisconsin DNR and Pierce County Sheriff's Department.

River Falls firefighters assisted at the scene.
