Truck driver cited for Stillwater Bridge incident
A truck driver who put the Stillwater Lift Bridge out of commission has been ticketed by Wisconsin authorities for inattentive driving.
St. Croix County Sheriff Dennis Hillstead said Wednesday that Elwyn Juenke, 70, Farmington, Minn., was cited for the July 7 incident.
The boom from his company's delivery truck hit 11 overhead rafters on the historic bridge between Houlton and Stillwater.
The structure was closed Wednesday for repairs. It will re-open next week so folks can get to Stillwater's Lumberjack Days, but then it will shut down again until early August.
Hillstead said the truck did exceed height or weight requirements, and it was not speeding. He said the driver, "wasn't paying attention to what he was doing."
Mary McFarland of the Minnesota Department of Transportation says it's not known how much the repairs will cost, but they'll be billed to the driver's insurer.
