Peggy Steffl came before the Clifton Town Board at this week's regular meeting and accused her neighbors of shooting their guns all the time, creating a racket that shattered the pleasant way of living in the country.

"I've told them it's disturbing," Steffl said. "I never would have moved here if I would have known this was going to happen.

Steffl has lived at her home for 12 years. Only recently, she claimed, has the gun shooting become a problem.

Some neighbors of Steffl said she's become a pest about the issue.

"I want to nip this in the bud," Greg Berg said at the Clifton Town meeting. "She's been harassing my neighbors. The sheriff put her in her place."

Steffl told the Town Board that her neighbors have been shooting on their land "all spring, summer and fall," even on Labor Day weekend. She said the noise sounds like a "war zone" and makes it impossible for her to be outside enjoying her yard, deck and garden.

However, Gary Johansmann said Steffl has accused him and others of shooting military grade weapons. He said the gun he shoots is a 9mm pistol, not a cannon.

"She's an instigator and she exaggerates," Johansmann said of Steffl.

The Town Board said it was powerless, legally, to do anything for either side.

Supervisor Greg Eggers said he's a hunter but usually sights his gun at a gun range.

Town Chairman LeRoy Peterson tried to play the role of peacemaker, saying to those at the meeting: "I just hope you can settle this neighborly."
