The State Patrol is stepping up its use of airplanes to catch speeders on Wisconsin highways.

The practice used to be a lot more common than in recent years, when it was scaled back due to tight budgets. Now, Transportation Secretary Mark Gottlieb tells the "Wausau Daily Herald" that four planes and a dozen pilots will be in the air this summer.

They'll clock the fastest drivers and radio the information to troopers below. It's all in the name of safety. Gottlieb says speed is a factor in about 30-percent of Wisconsin traffic deaths.

An average of nine people are killed in Wisconsin traffic crashes during the Memorial Day Weekend which runs from Friday through Monday. Gottlieb says over 400 law enforcement agencies will be busy watching traffic during the holiday weekend
