Spice mixes with summer's heat for 12th curd fest

Think spicy hot when thinking of the 12th annual Ellsworth Cheese Curd Festival this Friday through Sunday in East End Park.

The celebration, organized by the Ellsworth Chamber of Commerce, features the theme "Livin' la Vida Queso."Admission is free.

Buttons are being sold for drawings on each of the three days--at 9:30 p.m. Friday for $100/$200, at 7:30 p.m. Saturday for $100/$200 and at 4 p.m. Sunday for $250/$500.

Prize winners must have a button; if they claim the prizes from their winning buttons within 15 minutes, the amount doubles.

The tentative schedule of events for this weekend shows:

--Friday, 6 p.m.-close, food and beer tent, festival merchandise and fresh curds; 6 p.m.-dark, craft and business show and sale; 8 p.m.-midnight, "Midnight Special" performance.

--Saturday, 8-11 a.m., pancake breakfast; 8:30 a.m., Cheese Curd Fun Run; 9 a.m.-close, festival merchandise and fresh curds; 10 a.m.-noon, kids' crafts; 10 a.m.-5 p.m., craft and business show and sale, chainsaw art carving, bounce house and kids' train rides; 10 a.m.-close, food and beer tent; 12:30 p.m., kiddie parade; 1-3 p.m., Brad Marx performance; 2 p.m., pedal tractor pull; 3-4 p.m., bingo, meat raffle; 4-8 p.m., "Back Channel Blues Band" performance; 8 p.m.-midnight, "D Boys" performance.

--Sunday, 8-11 a.m., pancake breakfast; 9 a.m.-close, festival merchandise and fresh curds; 10 a.m.-5 p.m., craft and business show and sale, chainsaw art carving, bounce house, kids' train rides; 10 a.m.-close, food and beer tent; 1 p.m., pie contest entry deadline at Ellsworth Co-op Creamery; 1 p.m., parade; 1-4 p.m., Pickles the Clown; 2-4 p.m., Brad Marx performance; 2:30 p.m., fresh curd eating contest, hot-dipped curd-eating contest; 3-4 p.m., bingo, meat raffle; 3 p.m., bean bag tournament; 4-5 p.m., festival auction; 4-6 p.m., festival finale.
